Ukulele Elementary Workshop – October 2021

Virtual workshop provided by West Music for a fee of $99 per attendee.

This is a 1.5 day workshop taking place

Friday, 5:30pm-8:30pm CST
and
Saturday: 10:00am-4:30pm CST.

Attendees will learn tips on improving their personal ukulele skills on Friday with Grammy Award-winning performers Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, then will learn how to incorporate ukulele into the classroom on Saturday with 3 experienced classroom teachers (Michael Checco, Paul Corbiere, and Sandy Lantz).

Saturday will include 3 breakout sessions for practical applications and song arrangements.

Workshop Description
This 1½ day virtual workshop is designed for elementary music educators who would like to introduce ukulele into their general music curriculum but are not sure where to begin and who would like to develop their personal skills on the instrument to be able to confidently teach it.  Attendees of all skill levels will benefit from content that has been carefully selected by our experienced presenters.  You’ll learn tried-and-true tips and concepts to progress your proficiency and in bringing the ukulele into your classroom.  Topics will include proper ukulele technique, classroom planning/management, fun drills, classroom song arrangements, and more!

Spend Friday evening with Grammy Awarding-winning folk artists and life-long performers Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer who will share their passion for the ukulele and show you how to unlock its potential. There will be 2 sessions on Friday for attendees to learn basic rudiments, tricks, and techniques designed to help improve your personal proficiency on the instrument. As an added bonus, attendees will receive a FREE month of Marcy’s ukulele lessons on Peghead Nation.

Saturday will focus on how to introduce ukulele into a classroom and incorporate it into a well-rounded curriculum. Our experienced classroom teachers will show you how ukulele is an effective elementary music teaching tool and how to adapt songs to create arrangements to accompany general classroom instruments.

The registration fee includes all materials and sessions, and each workshop is limited to 75 participants. Participants should have their own ukulele to use during the workshop. GRAMMY WINNERS, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer are consummate entertainers, master musicians and trailblazers in multiple genres of folk, country, swing and family music. They are also two fun loving gals of the ukulele.

Veteran instructors and performers at the best-known music camps, they have enjoyed teaching at Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, The Augusta Workshops, Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Kamps, Swannanoa Gathering, and California Coast Music Camp. They are also among the most prolific and popular instructors with Homespun Tapes. Marcy’s DVD Series, “Ukulele for Kids” has been a BEST SELLER for publisher Homespun Tapes where she even teaches Ginger the Dog, a loveable puppet how to play ukulele! Now, Marcy’s YouTube lessons on ukulele have made fans around the world, both young and old.

The duo organizes and performs in the annual Strathmore UkeFest in North Bethesda, MD, drawing 2300 fans and now in its 12th year. This 5-day camp and free community concert pulls together players of all levels and fans to fuel them! They have also taught/performed at Ashokan Uke Festival, Lil Rev’s Milwaukee Uke Fest, Uke Ceiliedh of Nova Scotia, Port Townsend Uke Fest & Camp, Steve Kaufman’s Acoustic Kamp, and Swannanoa Gathering. As performers, Cathy & Marcy have spent 35 years on tour worldwide from Japan to New Zealand, Vancouver to New York, China, Malaysia, and everywhere in between. Recent shows include the GRAMMY Museum (LA), Smithsonian Folklife Festival (Washington, DC), Wolf Trap Theater in the Woods (VA), Tucson Folk Festival, and Chicago’s WFMT Folk Festival. They are master musicians on ukulele, five string banjo, cello banjo, acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin, percussion and a world of other instruments.

 

michael checco

Michael Checco is an elementary music educator in Middletown, Pennsylvania and currently teaches K-5 classroom music, chorus, and an African Drumming Ensemble. Michael is also a member of the World Music Drumming teaching staff and an instructor in Elizabethtown College’s Music and Peacebuilding master’s degree program.

Michael’s classroom offers students the opportunity to develop their musicianship through singing, dancing, drumming, and playing ukuleles, xylophones, and recorders. He maintains an active schedule as a workshop clinician, singer, and conductor, and especially loves the opportunity to work with fellow music educators.

Previous teaching experiences include general and choral music at the middle school level as well as choral music at the secondary level.

Michael received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Susquehanna University, where he studied trumpet and voice and a Master of Music Education from West Chester University with certification in Kodály pedagogy. When not teaching, Michael enjoys cooking, building marimbas, and collecting an unnecessary number of drums and ukuleles.

 

paul corbiere

Paul Corbiere has taught Elementary General Music for 27 years in Florida and in Iowa, where he is currently the 4-5 Music Teacher at Oak Hill Elementary in the Clear Creek Amana School District. Paul has been a member of the World Music Drumming Teaching Staff since 1999 and is the cofounder of the Beat for Peace program – combining World Music Drumming and Resiliency Research for students with multiple risk factors. He has been a featured clinician at numerous state Music Education Association Conferences, AOSA Conferences, and for the European Council of International Schools.

Paul has authored several resources that feature ensembles for the general music classroom, including Happy Jammin’, From Bags to Riches, and Skins, Sticks, and Bars. He is also a consultant for Just Play It! Classroom Harmonica Method, a classroom Blues Harmonica curriculum and is a contributing author to Use Your Ukes from Heritage Music Press.

Paul received his MM in Percussion Performance from The Ohio State University and his BFA in Music Education from Florida Atlantic University.

 

Sandy Lantz

Sandy Lantz has taught elementary music at Edison Park Creative & Expressive Arts Elementary in Ft Myers, FL since 1991. She received a BME from Eastern Kentucky University and is certified in Orff-Schulwerk. Currently, Sandy co- teaches Level I teacher training courses at the University of Central Florida, Stetson University, and Florida International University with Gretchen Wahlberg.

Sandy has been a guest conductor/clinician for all-state students and all-county ensembles. She and Gretchen Wahlberg have co-conducted all county ensembles across Florida. In 2016, Sandy and Gretchen were the co-conductors and clinicians FMEA All-State Orff Ensemble and South Regional Orff in 2018. In addition, Sandy has co-taught workshops for numerous Orff Chapters across the country, as well as National AOSA conferences and state MEA conventions.

Sandy co-authored the musicals Treasures of the Orient and Western Trails, which earned the University of New Hampshire’s Zornio Memorial Playwriting Award. She and Gretchen have also co-authored best-selling general classroom resources including Drum It Up, Creative Bits with Children’s Lit, S’more Bits with Children’s Lit, and Strum It UP.

  • A Certificate of Completion will be provided for all participants for 8 participation hours – participants may use it for Professional Development/Continuing Educations clock hours if applicable.
  • Attendees will receive a FREE month of Marcy’s ukulele lessons on Peghead Nation. Access will be provided upon completion of workshop.

If the workshop is cancelled by West Music, all registration fees will be 100% refunded.

If the participant cancels their registration, the refund policy is as follows:

  • Before October 15 – full refund ($99)
